Assignments
There will be weekly assignments for this class. Please refer to this page often! Below are a list of weekly assignments.
Assignment List
Assignment 1 ~ Freestyle Photography
Assignment 2 ~ Equivalent Exposure/Depth of Field
Assignment 3 ~ Composition, Composition
+ Portfolio Proposal and the Portfolio itself
Assignment #1: Freestyle Photography
To keep it simple the first week we’re easing into classes -
Take 6 photos of a subject of your choice that demonstrates your current photographic ability. Try to take photos demonstrating a range of skills, techniques, and aesthetic composition. Also, if you are using a digital medium post your pictures to the gallery with the link provided on the website. We will be utilizing this gallery program to upload and view photos online throughout the course of the class. As a reminder, you must have photos posted online BEFORE the class in order for them to be considered on time. For those of you who are working with film cameras, please bring in prints to the next class meeting, or if you have the time, you can upload them to the Flickr group gallery as well.
Due by: Wednesday, February 10th
Assignment #2: Equivalent Exposure
Switch your camera to manual. Nine photos total.
Take three photos of three separate scenes, changing your shutter speed, aperture and ISO while retaining standard exposure. The three scenes should correspond with: landscape, portrait and still-life. Strive to maintain consistency in lighting within each scene. Note that you do not need to take each photo from the same angle – be creative with this assignment. Record the settings that you shot with (aperture, shutter speed and ISO), and reserve them for discussion later.
- Three sets of 3 photos. Nine photos total.
- In one set (not the landscape), create a noticeable shallow/wide DOF.
- Exposure value (EV) should be zero (normal exposure) for ALL nine photos.
- No photos should be overexposed or underexposed (too bright or too dark).
- You MUST record your shooting parameters (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) for discussion later in class.
Your ultimate goal is for every photo to be properly exposed (not too dark, not too bright), while still changing the image parameters manually. Do not let the camera do this for you by using aperture/shutter-priority, program or auto mode – use your camera’s manual mode.
Due by: Wednesday, February 24th
Assignment #3: Composition, Composition
Take 5 quality photos of any subject of your choice. In each photograph try to utilize and emphasize at least 2 different compositional elements (either discussed in class or that you’ve come up with on your own). Be prepared to discuss each photograph and which elements you’ve tried to incorporate into each picture. Try not to stress the same compositional elements more than once for the entire assignment.
Due by: Wednesday, March 10th
